Now in its 19th year, The Mariner's Book of Days is an ever-growing encyclopedia of nautical fact, fiction, and folklore, and has been hailed as the best, most entertaining nautical desk diary and calendar to see print. An invaluable reference, each annual edition is completely different from its predecessors, and all have become collector's items.
On every right-hand page is a week of days, with the nautical significance of each explored in brief by the author. On each left-hand page is a collection of nautical miscellany evoking the rich traditions of the sea. Entertaining and informative, illustrated with a variety of lovely etchings, engravings, sketches, and watercolors, The Mariner's Book of Days takes readers on a 365-day voyage through history.
Tidbits and trivia for the nautically impaired. (2010-03-07)So, it's another desk calender. But for those of us who would rather be afloat than in our corporate brigs, this one brings a bit of sea air to the room. My first one was given to me many years ago and was a delight. Since then, a copy for the next year was on my Christmas list and if disappointed, a search party was commenced.
Each page covers a week, with an historic event for each date but still enough room to schedule voyages and working parties, and even some minor trivia like birthdays and wedding anniversaries. The verso page is full of potpourri nautical; quotes from books and famous people, how-to advice, cooking, notable voyages and storms, delightful woodcuts. However, one must have self-discipline to enjoy it for the whole year. The temptation is to read it cover to cover when first received, producing trivia overload and dulling the experience of discovery when the real time comes. In fact, I have reread them looking for a forgotten fact and recently was able to identify a "Final Jeopardy" quote as from John Paul Jones, from a past issue. This is a great gift for your sailing friend, who might even invite you for a sail in return.
Mariner's Book of Days (2010-03-03)I've been using this daily/weekly desk calendar for over ten years. What an amazing collection of maritime facts and history. Peter Spectre must have a wealth of resources to keep coming up with new information year after year.
Useful, informative and fun (2010-02-05)Like the Calendar of Wood Boats, I wouldn't have much of a year without the Mariner's Book of Days. Of course it is a useful day planner; room for notes, phases of the Moon and all that. But even better, the Book of Days is a short weekly dose of nautical literature with a daily snippet of nautical history. It is a pleasure to see the graceful, old style nautical drawings and read the words of watery wisdom. The Mariner's Book of Days can only help you stay afloat and entertained, keeping you from grounding too hard on the rough shoals of the daily schedule.
Wonderful! (2010-01-30)I've been a fan of the Mariner's Book of Days since it first came out and it just keeps getting better. This is the one nautical desk diary and calender I keep beside me on my desk at all times and I use it a lot. It is complete with Peter Spectre's outstanding job of collecting fascinating nautical tidbits, facts, historical thingees and miscellaneous observations as well as displays often enchanting old-time etchings and pen-and-ink maritime artwork. It keeps me connected with my boat and the boating world. -- Marlin Bree, author, Wake of the Green Storm, In the Teeth of the Northeaster, Broken Seas, and the Dangerous Book for Boaters.
Sailor's Delight (2009-12-10)Although not really a sailor, this calendar is a favorite of my husband's as he thoroughly enjoys reading it daily for the very interesting historical stories and information. We buy it every year and were very pleased to see it on Amazon for an excellent price. Thank you.

Running Calendar Great Motivator (2010-02-14)Marty Jerome's THE COMPLETE RUNNER'S DAY-BY-DAY LOG: 2010 DESK CALENDAR stands alone as the best annotated daily log calendar available -- rich in motivating photographs and paragraphs, intelligently written, and teeming with useful advice for both the ordinary casual runner and the more dedicated long-distance harrier. Plenty of space is provided for runners to enter their own daily summaries of their personal athletic experiences, to keep track of training routines, and to plan for upcoming running events. The photographs, interspersed throughout the training log, bring heart-warming smiles and visualized incentives to anyone wondering whether it's worth leaving one's warm and comfortable abode for a run outdoors. More importantly, even for experienced runners the words of advice and tidbits of informative, up-to-date and accurate health information on everything from injury recovery to foot-strike techniques will provide welcome words regarding a broad range of running-related topics. These suggestion-filled commentaries will make any reader, and certainly athletes, want to get up in the morning, turn to the day's page in the running log and think about a running plan for that day while devouring the accompanying advice-packed paragraph. This is my second year using this wonderful calendar log; it is a pleasure to read, practical, and easy to use. A must-have for any runner or anyone thinking about becoming a runner.
Runner's Log (2010-02-08)The Runner's Day-by-Day Log and Calendar is a very useful tool for runners. I have purchased it every year since Jim Fixx created the first log in 1979. John Jerome took it over after Fixx died and his son Marty is carrying on the tradition. The book is now printed in China, which I don't like, but it remains a useful tool nonetheless. It is a handy place to keep track of daily workouts and races and has many good tips and essays for each month. I am a veteran of more than 100 marathons and 50 ultramarathons and have found the logs to be very handy through the years.
Never Sent and Never got my refund (2010-02-07)Pretty Lame, I ordered this book on Jan 3rd, 2010. they say its coming in the mail but I have to wait until February. (six weeks to deliver a 2010 Calendar/training log?) I get a note from Amazon in late January that the book is not available. I am still waiting for the refund as it has yet to show a credit on my account. I also hear this newer edition is not as good as the older books from when John Jerome (RIP) was running the show. Its seems Marto is out of touch with the runners and there is barely room to write you workouts in. If we wanted pictures of old people walking down the beach we would buy a picture book.
Useful guide for runners (2010-01-27)I have used this book in it's various incarnaions since 1994. It provides a format to record your running mileage and details for every week and while also compiling your yearly total. The training suggestions and running related anecdotes are also helpful.
An Institutional Favorite (2010-01-09)If no other gift at Christmas, this is the required favorite for my husband. He uses it every day and has done this for well over 15 years. Please keep printing it every year--no changes needed!
