Until Today! : Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind

Author: Iyanla Vanzant
Publisher: Fireside
Publication date: 2001-08-14

Price: $15.95

This book of 365 daily devotionals supports the time-honored adage, "Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?" The charismatic spiritual leader Iyanla Vanzant knows how easy it is to stay stuck in "old sentiments, resentments, beliefs, decisions, agreements, judgments, and ideas that may have become habitual." Through these devotions Vanzant hopes to show readers that the easiest way to create change is to simply shift your attitude--today. "We often work so hard to get the things we want that we miss the fact that it is the landscape of the inner world that stands between us and true happiness."

In the closing paragraph of each one-page devotional Vanzant names an old way of thinking and offers readers a new attitude to try on "just for today." For example, Vanzant writes, "Until today, you may have believed that you had to stay in the painful hole of hurt caused by the loss of a loved one. Just for today, make a conscious effort and choice to cover the hole and move on." Some might consider these devotions a fancy term for affirmations. Vanzant scoffs at the notion. Time spent in devotion is not a "New Age trick through which you can impose your will on God, the universe, or those around you," she writes. "Devotion is the reverent, personal act of surrendering your will to the Divine will." --Gail Hudson

Great reminders of the important things in life (2010-08-28)

This isn't a book to sit down and read through from beginning to end; it's one that invites you to open at any page, at any time, to see what you might find there. Vanzant's insights into the things that make us feel unhappy--or more specifically, the things we do to make ourselves feel unhappy--are very strong. She's been there, making herself miserable, and she wants to share the things that she's learned about how to avoid that practice. Her words are heartfelt and sincere, and they offer very clear and definite ways that we can break destructive patterns in our own lives--destructive thoughts, destructive decisions, destructive actions. . . you name it. Highly recommended for anyone who's interested in helping themselves to grow into happier, healthier people.

LOVED IT (2010-08-17)

BOUGHT THIS FOR A FEMALE PRISONER IN TDCJ AND SHE LIVES BY IT DAILY. SHE HAD ONE COPY THAT WAS LOST AND WAS SO UPSET TO BE WITHOUT IT I BOUGHT ANOTHER FOR HER.

Calender Art (2010-08-24)

Jonathan Green's art is classic with vivid colors. I love his paintings of women, they look so regal.

vivid and alive (2010-02-16)

Jonathan Green is a premier African American Contemporary Artist. The art work in this calendar is alive with primary colors that seem to move on the page. Scenes from his childhood rememberances of growing up in rural South Carolina celebrate the culture of the Gulla people. If you look long enough you can almost feel the soft southern breeze from the low country float across the back of your neck. This calendar is displayed prominiently and proudly in my work space at the office.

Great Art ! (2010-01-31)

The ART of Jonathan Green never fails to inspire and make me feel happy! Since I can not afford his paintings, his calenders are the next best thing.

Something I purchase every year (2010-01-07)

The annual calendars of African American Art from the Michael Rosenfeld Gallery have become an important part of my life. I'm a music teacher in a predominantly African American school and I have used old editions of the calendars to decorate my classroom. My room comes alive with the movement and colors in all the amazing paintings. My students constantly study the paintings and frequently ask about the artists and the techniques the artists used in rendering their work. I use the current calendar at home; it hangs in my home office above my desk and inspires me as I work. For practical purposes, I also write dates that I need to remember directly onto the calendar. I can't imagine not having the calendars available to me because they enhance so many different aspects of my life. If you want to see top-notch artwork by African Americans, then the Michael Rosenfeld calendars are the best. Included are the most well-known artists, such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Charles Alston, but lesser known artists, too, such as Hughie Lee-Smith, Ernest Crichlow, Hale Woodruff, Alma Thomas and my most favorite of all, Charles White.
